About

I am a freelance writer living in Portland, Oregon with three dogs, three chickens and a handful of good intentions. I’m drawn to topics of urban farming and how and what we eat. I have a little bit of experience with gardening and good deal of practice with eating. I’ve recently started gardening myself and through a series of trials and a lot of errors, I’m finally having some success. But, I have a lot to learn. I want to know what other individuals are doing, what businesses are doing, what kinds of policies are in review, etc. I am taking a journey here and by no means claim to be an expert. I think I can prove that anyone can do this, on whatever scale they have the time and means to undertake. I want to improve the way I live and eat and to learn from others who are doing the same.
I am a student in the University of Oregon Journalism school and have been writing for local newspapers and magazines around Portland, Oregon since 2002. During my “day job,” I design and sell energy efficient lighting upgrades for commercial buildings. It’s a far cry from gardening but still plays a role in improving our environmental impact. Two things are missing from my day job: dirt and writing. Here, I get to combine my two loves. I hope you enjoy it.
